As the Christmas season nears, my good friends were looking to update their family photo for a Christmas card they distribute each year. Although Arlington is a very urban area, their goal was to get back to nature and make a photo free of urban clutter. As I’ve mentioned before, Arlington provides its residents many amenities. Among them are a large collection of parks, greenways and playing fields. We headed out to a local, yet somewhat unknown park that has beautiful hiking trails and is covered with woods and fields. I think we found the right spot.

If you’re in need of a new family photo, you can reach me via the contacts page.

Such a beautiful family and doesn’t Milan (in red) have some real sass?

Their daughter Sofia is always full of laughs and giggles.

Although nearly every tree in the park had dropped its leaves weeks ago, we found one magnificent tree that had just deposited a carpeting of bright yellow leaves. How could we pass that up?

I think its so cool how the tree creates a perfect outline.

I was digging around in the archives this evening, looking through folders and folders of negatives, contact sheets and 8×10 prints. While so buried, I thought about the newer generation of photographers who will only have grown up on digital cameras and Photoshop and it made me a little sad to think that they may never have the opportunity to shoot B&W film and spend hours in a chemical filled dark room trying to get that one print to turn out just right. It was a time consuming process, dust was a constant worry, and buying your favorite pack of Agfa paper always seemed to break the bank, but it was fun.

But digital photography and Photoshop are also a lot of fun. Photoshop in particular has many different options for processing digital files and extensive filters for creativity. In one of the archive folders I found an 8×10 that reminded me of an “old skool” filter method. The trick for creating this image was not Photoshop, but rather placing a Vaseline smeared piece of glass over the B&W paper when developing the image. The light shines through the glass and Vaseline creating the unique pattern. My sister-in-law Caroline, a fantastic wedding photographer in Northern Utah, taught me this method. Her website is Still Light Photography.

Did I mention it was cold? Freezing cold. I had on two jackets, while Abby was wearing a simple, but beautiful turtleneck sweater. Fortunately, Matt would hold her coat while we were shooting and then hurry over with it when we changed locations.

An article by David Derbeyshire in the Daily Mail explores “How Children Lost the Right to Roam in Four Generations”. After reading that, it got me thinking about how far I roamed as a kid and now how far do I let my own roam. While they’re still young, I wonder just far I’ll let them go as they start to grow. Unfortunately, a stigma has developed that children who roam beyond the confines of the front yard will either get run over or abducted and that those parents who do allow their kids to go out are somehow negligent.

I really like these quotes from the article and wanted to share them here:

Stress levels fall within minutes of seeing green spaces…even filling a home with flowers and plants can improve concentration and lower stress.

If children haven’t had contact with nature, they never develop a relationship with natural environment and they are unable to use it to cope with stress…

Studies have shown that people deprived of contact with nature were at greater risk of depression and anxiety. Children are getting less and less unsupervised time in the natural environment.

They need time playing in the countryside, in parks and in gardens where they can explore, dig up the ground and build dens.

To that end, The Conservation Fund in 2007 started The National Forum on Children and Nature, a 54-member Forum consisting of corporate CEOs, three mayors, four governors, parks officials and others dedicated to reconnecting kids with nature.

The Fund held a kick-off meeting in June 2007 at the Evermay House, an historic 3.5 acre estate in Washington D.C. In Sept. 2008 it was put on the market for $49 million dollars. I was invited to photograph the event.

Larry Selzer, CEO of The Conservation Fund and Director of The Forum on Children and Nature, addresses the group.

Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods, and Honorary Co-Chair of the Forum.

The Everymay house is simply stunning inside and I loved the light that was flowing through the hallway in these next two shots.

As most photographers shooting a large group know, it’s difficult to gather everyone together and get their attention; this group was no exception. After having to raise my voice a bit to get everyone listening, they managed to organize themselves into a respectable looking group. Still, this was a challenging shot. I was standing on a wobbly chair (I would have preferred a ladder for additional elevation), the fountain was still flowing and there was a lot of contrast, but in the end this turned into a decent group shot.

Many thanks to The Conservation Fund for inviting me to spend an afternoon with an amazing group of people. I wish you much success in this great initiative.

My little subject here had a lot of fun running around the open grassy area, even doing “tricks”.

Recently, one of my favorite not-for-profit organizations, The Conservation Fund, asked me to come photograph the Kodak American Greenways Awards ceremony, an event that they hold every year in conjunction with Kodak and National Geographic celebrating and honoring individuals and organizations who have dedicated their time and energy to the creation and expansion of America’s greenways. If you’re unfamiliar with the term, the Wikipedia definition for greenway is “a long, narrow piece of land, often used for recreation and pedestrian and bicycle traffic and sometimes including multiple transportation (streetcar, light rail) or retail uses.” The Conservation Fund focuses more on greenways that are used for recreation and serve as wildlife habitat linkages.

The event is held at the National Geographic headquarters in Washington D.C., and while I may never become a National Geographic photographer, I at least had the opportunity to take photographs in their hallowed halls.

I’ve attended this event in previous years and this one by far was the most fun and entertaining. The Fund rented a long green carpet and Kodak, one of the key sponsors, hung a backdrop against the wall.

I was asked to photograph the guests and participants as they arrived at the event and Kodak would print out 4×6 images on a mobile print kiosk they brought along. Many of the attendees were happy to mug for the camera, like this group of lovely ladies.

After taking over a hundred photos of the guests, I turned my attention to the awards ceremony and was faced with a tricky glass background that tended to make the heads of dark haired individuals disappear.

Adjusting the angle helped a bit, but the background was a little busy. Here, Mary Bomar, Director of the National Park Service, discusses the importance of greenways.

Finally, I’m so impressed with the sharpness of both my new Nikon 50mm 1.4D lens and Nikon D700 camera, as shown by the photo of these two Conservation Fund staffers. Editorial note: names have been slightly blurred on the name tags.

Located just behind and to the right of these ladies is a gallery in the National Geographic headquarters where top quality photography and other exhibits are featured. I highly recommend a visit here to see what’s on display.
