About

Hi, I'm Christian, an Arlington, Virginia based photographer.  While this site's focus is my photography, it also provides an opportunity for me to explore others avenues and activities.  If you're interested in my photography and would like to have me shoot your next event, please contact me and I'd be happy to discuss it with you.

Air Force Cycling Classic 2009 Clarendon Cup

Arlington County has a lot to offer residents, from plentiful housing options to numerous parks and convenient public transportation. But for those interested in professional sports, one must look to Washington D.C. and Maryland for baseball (Washington Nationals), football (Washington Redskins), hockey (Capitols) and soccer (DC United).

However, once a year, professional cycling comes to town and it is a showstopper. Organizers shut down the streets in Clarendon, turning the place into a technical 1 kilometer long race course. There are masters, women’s and kids’ races, but the highlight is the 100 lap men’s race (62.14 miles).

We took our son to ride in the 1 kilometer kid’s race, which he absolutely loved. Following that, the men began their race. This year, Alejando Borrajo, with Team Colavita Olive Oil / Sutter Home, won in a crazy time of 2:18:39. That’s an average speed of nearly 27 mph. Imagine riding at that pace for 2+ hours. These guys are machines.

VeloNews was on-site covering the action. For a detailed race report, see their article.

Here’s a collection of images I took from the men’s race:

Chuck Hutcheson (156), with Team Battley Harley Davidson, and Karl Menzies (22), with Team OUCH pb Maxxis, round the fast technical corner from Washington Boulevard to Highland Street.

The race is really accessible for spectators; this corner has racers coming within mere feet, although it felt more like inches.

On the same technical corner, Arran Brown (114, blue and white jersey), with Team Medscheme, slides out in the corner taking out Russ Langley (157), with Team Battley Harley Davidson. Eric Barlevav (165), with Team Mountain Khakis, manages to steer clear of the mess.

Chad Gerlach (123), with Team Amore & Vita, lead for much of the race. He almost lapped the field, coming within 8 seconds at one point.

Francois Parisine (31), with Team Planet Energy, navigates the high speed turn from Washington Boulevard on to Highland Street. The riders average a speed of nearly 27 mph.

Before the race started, my wife mentioned that an old high school friend, who she hadn’t seen in years, was a professional bike racer. By chance she ran into him before the race started and hung out with his wife, also a high school classmate. Here, my wife’s friend, Reid Mumford (13), with team Kelly Benefit Strategies, corners onto Highland Street.

Team Kelly Benefit Strategies lead the peloton in an effort to reel in race leader Chad Gerlach.

Chad Gerlach was heavily cheered on by the crowd as he effortlessly raced around the course. He lead for 60 laps and ended up finishing 6th.

May 31, 2009 - 7:41 pm Mike - Nice shots. What about pictures from your kid's big race?

June 1, 2009 - 10:09 am Brad - Great work, especially on the panning. Those shots are always the hardest.

June 1, 2009 - 11:19 am Caroline C - Amazing pictures. I almost felt like I was amongst the racers myself. I can't believe the angles that they take those corners at.

June 1, 2009 - 11:22 am Caroline C - Oh, and if you are willing, I think it would be interesting to know the details about some of those pictures. Such as fstop and speed.

June 1, 2009 - 1:32 pm Barbara - Amazing photos! They're better than any professional photos that I have seen of the Olympic athletes. A very gifted photographer.

June 4, 2009 - 2:42 pm Marlet - Your photos really give a sense of the action, particularly the crash sequence. Also, the last shot of Veilleux is fantastic.

June 5, 2009 - 7:49 am Nic White - Great pics! I was in the race with Team Medscheme from South Africa, and my mate Arran Brown is the one who crashed! We enjoyed the weekend, but were a bit overwhelmed in the crit, without any crit racing recently we struggled with the speed, and corners - obviously! Glad you could capture the moments.

June 6, 2009 - 9:14 pm Tom - Great Stills! I think we met along the course. I was shooting with a D-700 too. You really captured the pile up in that turn. Tom

June 8, 2009 - 6:57 pm Chris - @Nic: Hey, glad you found the site. Chuck Hutcheson, pictured in the first image, also e-mailed me. Fun to have some racers interested in their photos.

June 8, 2009 - 6:59 pm Chris - @Tom: Hi Tom, I'd love to see some of your shots from the event. I pretty much stayed around the Washington Blvd and Highland Street area due to family constraints, so I never got to see some of the other corners.

June 9, 2009 - 8:14 am Andrea - What sweeeeet photos of this race!!!!! These are AWESOME. The way you shot these makes me feel like I'm standing in the middle of the road and watching the racers come right at me.

May 19, 2010 - 4:04 pm Bruce - Oh, and if you are willing, I think it would be interesting to know the details about some of those pictures. Such as fstop and speed.
