About

Hi, I'm Christian, an Arlington, Virginia based photographer.  While this site's focus is my photography, it also provides an opportunity for me to explore others avenues and activities.  If you're interested in my photography and would like to have me shoot your next event, please contact me and I'd be happy to discuss it with you.

Air Force Memorial – Snow Edition

On December 19, 2009, the Washington D.C. area was hit with a record setting snowfall. The airports were closed and all the usual city sounds had disappeared under a 16″ blanket of beautiful white. What this also meant is that the roads were virtually clear of traffic, which makes for perfect snow driving. I sat inside my warm house weighing the pros and cons of going outside and finally around 10:30pm couldn’t hold myself back any longer. I dressed warmly, threw my tripod and camera bag in the van and headed out onto the snow covered streets with the nearby Air Force Memorial my destination. I’ve photographed it before, but never in the snow.

I just loved that I was all alone. Perhaps the only one crazy dedicated enough to venture outside to ply his craft.

Here, the four person honor guard created by sculptor Zenos Feudakis stands nobly in the driving snow.

airforce_2

On the north end of the memorial is a “Glass Contemplation Wall” that honors fallen airmen. There are several planes etched on the glass. This shows just one of the planes, looking through the glass toward the three spires which represent the three core values of the Air Force – “integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all that is done”.

Every time I photograph this monument I find it a challenge and suspect I’ll be back again.

February 4, 2010 - 4:55 pm Dani - Stunning! I love the photo of the honor guard memorial. How did you capture the driving snow?

March 30, 2010 - 3:23 am Anonymous - I lov u

April 5, 2010 - 1:06 pm Caroline - These are beautiful. I especially love the 4 soldiers. I love how they almost look like glass. I like the way you captured the movement of the snow; the lines add alot of texture to the image. This would be a great photo to try printing on metal or a metallic paper. We have a couple pics of this same monument on metallic paper that we have in our home.

Snow Angel

For those living in the Washington D.C. area, the record setting snow that hit the area beginning December 18, 2009 may be a fond memory. But for one special family, that night will always remain particularly special, for that was the night their little snow angel arrived.

It was so much fun to photograph this beautiful little girl. Her parents have this awesome master bedroom with large windows that let in tons of natural light.

Here I think she looks so peaceful.

s_s-03

s_s-04

Doesn’t she look so sweet hang on her mom’s shoulder?

s_s-05

During some down time while I was waiting for the baby to fall back asleep, I headed down to their basement. And what did I find? Three other siblings playing on some beanbags.

s_s-06

February 5, 2010 - 10:00 pm JFR - I love the image of the baby all wrapped up and sleeping. So peaceful.

March 17, 2010 - 6:53 pm Marlet - What a fun idea to get some shots of the siblings during a newborn shoot. And what a great shot!

April 5, 2010 - 1:06 pm Caroline - I love the use of color in the last image, very nice.

The Three Sisters

The Washington D.C. area has seen some terribly cold temperatures the past couple weeks. In addition, a snowstorm two weeks prior dumped 20″ on the area, forcing me to cancel a planned photo shoot with these three sisters and reschedule.

When its 20 degrees outside, there’s no chance of going outside. Fortunately, we had some lovely spaces inside to choose from.

Speaking of lovely…

January 6, 2010 - 3:47 pm Gina - What a cute family. I especially like the picture of big sis and the baby.

January 6, 2010 - 3:59 pm Reid - You've nicely captured the eyes of each of these little ladies - the brown, the hazel, the baby blue. These girls are darling.

January 28, 2010 - 10:41 pm Caroline - I especially like the pictures of the baby, they are very sweet.

Family of Four

As the Christmas season nears, my good friends were looking to update their family photo for a Christmas card they distribute each year. Although Arlington is a very urban area, their goal was to get back to nature and make a photo free of urban clutter. As I’ve mentioned before, Arlington provides its residents many amenities. Among them are a large collection of parks, greenways and playing fields. We headed out to a local, yet somewhat unknown park that has beautiful hiking trails and is covered with woods and fields. I think we found the right spot.

If you’re in need of a new family photo, you can reach me via the contacts page.

lam_01

Such a beautiful family and doesn’t Milan (in red) have some real sass?

lam_02

Their daughter Sofia is always full of laughs and giggles.

lam_03

lam_04

Although nearly every tree in the park had dropped its leaves weeks ago, we found one magnificent tree that had just deposited a carpeting of bright yellow leaves. How could we pass that up?

lam_05

I think its so cool how the tree creates a perfect outline.

December 2, 2009 - 7:51 pm Caroline - These are great pictures, of course. Very nice location and use of the fall foilage. Perhaps we could book you over Christmas break??

December 15, 2009 - 3:42 pm Chantel - These are Great shots, I love them, well it helps that I love the subjects as they are my cute Sister in law and family. I adore the second one. Great job. Wish we lived closer!

It’s May in November

Even though it’s November, when I met adorable little May it sure felt like Spring. At 11 weeks, May is very lively. Even though her mom tried hard, she just wouldn’t go to sleep. So we made do and started taking photos. One of the challenges with newborn photography is the subject doesn’t care what mom, dad or the photographer wants. We had a wonderful time bouncing around the house in search of photo opportunities and May was quite cooperative.

This blanket that’s wrapped around May belongs to her dad, who I was told, “comes from a family of knitters.” They certainly make fine quality products.

may_01

I just love this photo, probably my favorite from the shoot. May’s mom and dad are both from England. They have fabulous accents and use words like “cot” and “pram” (say it with a British accent) to describe a crib and stroller.

may_02

Mom trying to bounce May to sleep. The light falling on May from the nearby window is so soft and gentle.

may_03

I found soft white fleece at G Street Fabrics which I think adds a nice texture to the background.

may_04

Their bathroom has this absolutely beautiful blue wall and I just knew we had to get some shots in there. I was standing in the tub, leaning up against the wall to get these. Doesn’t May curl up so nicely in mom’s arm?

may_05

May was full of giggles and smiles while laying in her cot.

Many thanks to May’s mom and dad for inviting me to their lovely home. I had a truly wonderful time.

November 20, 2009 - 10:22 am Dani - L.O.V.E. that baby's hair. So much and so fine, how great. You captured a delightful moment with mom and baby smiling at each other.

November 20, 2009 - 4:05 pm Tom - I agree - that photo with the baby holding her daddy's finger is fantastic. And what a sweet little face tucked into her mom's shoulder while she is bouncing her to sleep.

November 20, 2009 - 8:52 pm JFRL - Thanks for the note about the shot in the bathroom. The story behind the photographs is fun to hear. It sounds like we need photos of the photographer.

November 23, 2009 - 3:12 am Steven - Your photographs are stunning, May's eyes in one or two of the shots really melt you. My favourite is the one where May is in her cot and being tickled by Julia, something she probably does everyday that never gets caught on camera. Note: It is Mum, not Mom ! Of course it is "cot" and "pram". "Crib" is a card game you play in a pub and "stroller" is someone who likes walking alot !

November 23, 2009 - 3:18 am Lisa - FABULOUS picture of May in her cot laughing...and a really good picture of Jules too. May is perfect, you must be so proud!

November 23, 2009 - 10:13 am Barbara - Beautiful photos of the baby. You captured the spirit and personality of this tiny infant, along with the pleasure and bursting pride of the parents. Way to get into their souls!

November 23, 2009 - 1:51 pm Chris - Steven, you're right. I should have written mum. Not sure how that slipped through the edit.

November 24, 2009 - 5:16 am Hannah - Wow, they are gorgeous photos Jules!! She rocks.....can't wait to meet her xx

Little Leo

This is Leo. He’s a Virgo. And a darn cute one too. My friend and collegue invited me over to photograph Leo when he was just three weeks old and what a fun session we had. The light in their house is just beautiful and Leo was so cooperative. Mom and dad did a fantastic job keeping him asleep and happy.

Leo-001

I love how little babies curl their legs underneath, bum high in the air.

Leo-002

Leo-003

Leo has such a beautiful face and plenty of hair for a newborn.

Leo-004

Leo-005

Dad was happy to get involved. Doesn’t Leo just fit so perfectly in his arm?

Leo-006

Since mom is a fine southern girl, they decided a bayou theme would be perfect for Leo. The wall above Leo’s crib is decorated with cute little frogs, lillypads and even a few mosquitoes. Hanging outside his crib is this snake, which we decided would make a perfect temporary resting spot. He curls up very nicely in there.

Leo-007

This was such a fun shoot and I’m so glad that little Leo and I got to spend some quality time together. Thanks to Leo’s mom and dad for having me over.

October 17, 2009 - 9:01 pm Marlet - These are just precious. It makes me want another baby. I especially like the 2nd picture, the picture in front of the large green wall, and the picture of him on his dad's arm.

November 6, 2009 - 8:49 am amanda - I love all the photos! Thanks so much, Chris. Granted you had an adorable subject ;), but your creativity and vision were awesome!

November 9, 2009 - 5:29 pm Christina - These are BEAUTIFUL! Absolutely amazing! Leo is the perfect model already and so brave to pose with wild animals!:)

November 23, 2009 - 9:39 am Barbara - Wow! That's all I can say. What beautiful photography work. I especially like the dark backgrounds. The baby almost appears to be floating in space. Dad holding the baby in his hand and arm is also very poignant. Applause!

December 2, 2009 - 7:53 pm Caroline - Seriously Chris, will you give me some tips when you come out over Christmas. These are beautiful pictures. I am amazed. And where did you get that green background? Is it a wall?

Family Fun in Georgetown

Although I don’t get to Georgetown all that often, I did make it out there with Mike, Kim, Megan and Henry.  Kim exuded contagious excitement as we walked around the neighborhood. The architecture is unique; there are many different types of dwellings, entrances of every variety, and colors galore.  When we arrived a parking space was immediately available (which is a small miracle) and just a few feet away was a vibrant blue door.  This could only portend of good things to come on this fun family portrait session.

Megan simply has awesome eyes and is so cute.  She certainly hammed it up for the camera, playing a perfect model, or as she would describe it, princess.20090616-mandk-1

Another few doors down and we came across a nice set of stairs, and look, a charming family just happened to be sitting there.20090616-mandk-2

Megan and Henry are so great together.  She treats him like a king prince.20090616-mandk-3

Of course, we had to get a shot of Mike and Kim together.20090616-mandk-4

Megan loves her daddy.20090616-mandk-5

This family is so great together.  You can tell they have lots of love for one another.20090616-mandk-13

Besides the bags of M&M’s that the kids got from me for being on their best behavior, Kim brought some bubbles. They fascinated Henry and Megan danced through them.20090616-mandk-14

Mike and Kim, thanks for inviting me to share an evening with your great family.

June 19, 2009 - 8:31 am Mike - Thanks, Chris, these turned out really well. Looks like the overcast weather didn't present much of a problem, and the colors look great. It's almost enough to make me forget how much I hate traveling through Georgetown.

June 19, 2009 - 1:59 pm Caroline - Wow! Amazing pictures. You did a great job of capturing personalities and the colors are amazing. I would love to know, did you beef up the saturation or what? Perhaps I will have to call you and get your secrets. :) Oh and I love the idea of bringing the kids a treat if they are good. That is a tip I am definelty going to utilize. From experience I know that photographing families with small children can be...shall we say challenging, trying, frustrating, etc...so I am glad to have a little hint of how to make things go more smoothly. Fantastic pictures as always!

June 19, 2009 - 3:41 pm Barbara - These are amazing family photos. You capture the soul of the people. I want you to come and take pictures of our family.

June 19, 2009 - 4:50 pm Lenna - Chris, Great work! I am so looking forward to the awesome work that you will do for our family. Too bad we don't live closer or we could hire you as a photographer more often!

June 21, 2009 - 6:45 pm Marlet - These are some great family shots. The little boy's face is so sweet; I just want to give him a squeeze.

June 26, 2009 - 12:07 am James - Chris, I didn't know you were a photographer. These shots are awesome! Mikayla and I are thinking about getting a "fancy" camera for our 'round the world adventures. Looks like it's really worth it. But then, how am I going to get you to come too?

June 26, 2009 - 3:30 pm Steven - Chris, You really have a talent. Maybe when my family comes to visit Kim and Mike we can meet you. I would love to have you take our photographs.

June 26, 2009 - 3:31 pm Steven - Chris, You really have a talent. Maybe when my family comes to visit Kim and Mike we can meet you. I would love to have you take our photographs. (I'm Kims Brother)

June 26, 2009 - 5:26 pm Danica Nelson - I love this fam and you captured them beautifully. Favs are the one of Megan looking out into the sky and the last one of the family standing in the alley/walkway. Nice work!

June 26, 2009 - 10:55 pm Andrea - Beautiful shots Chris!!! Holy cow, you captured them beautifully! I LOVE the close ups of Megan's eyes!!

June 27, 2009 - 10:30 am John and Suzanne - Nice photography of a great family in the perfect location. Kim doesn't know it yet but she has a talent for photography, she just needs a little encouragement and a few tips! Come on Kim, give it a try. Chris, thanks for the wonderful photos of our daughters family. (Kim's parents and proud to be Henry and Megans Grandparents!)

June 29, 2009 - 12:05 am crystal - I'm Mike's sister and I just have to say what an incredible job you did on this photo session. Megan is not always the easiest to "capture" at her best, but you made it look easy. All of the pictures turned out beautiful and i'm sad that you don't live closer. If you ever happen to come to Utah let me know. I would love for you to take our family pictures.
